After the publication of Tolkien's ''The Silmarillion'', the guide was expanded to cover the latter work and republished as ''The Complete Guide to Middle-earth'' (1978).〔 The thoroughness and accuracy of the book has earned it high praise.〔〔Christopher Tolkien, who used the book extensively during the editing of his father's writing, wrote in the introduction to ''Unfinished Tales'' that he found it to be "an admirable work of reference" (p. 4).〕 Foster earned a Ph.
